DUI Check points in Fayetteville

This was posted in the Fayetteville Observer. It's late Friday night on one of Fayetteville's busiest thoroughfares.
Traffic is backed up several blocks as dozens of Fayetteville police officers and Highway Patrol troopers stand alongside Bragg Boulevard, calmly checking the license and registration of each driver who passes through.
The checkpoint will result in some tickets for minor violations and a few warnings. The real goal, though, is to stop those suspected of drunken driving.
But it can be frustrating, some lawmen and activists say, when the names and faces of those being pulled over begin to get familiar.
In Cumberland County, the average drunken-driving defendant has one of the longest waits in the state before his case is heard. In the meantime, the offender is often back on the road and - in some cases - getting new DWI charges.
